Lucille Roberts Women’s Fitness is a gym designed exclusively for women. Founded in 1969 by fitness enthusiast Lucille Roberts, the gym quickly became a well-known name in women’s health and wellness. Roberts, a graduate of Penn State University, was the first woman to earn a degree from Harvard Business School’s Owner/President Management program. Her passion for fitness and business led her to create a gym where women could exercise in a comfortable and supportive environment.
Lucille Roberts and her husband initially opened a spa in Manhattan, New York, under the name The Body Shop. However, the name caused confusion, as many assumed it was an auto repair business. To establish a clearer identity, the business was rebranded as Lucille Roberts. In addition to building a successful fitness brand, Roberts authored two books, Computercise and The Lucille Roberts 14 Day Makeover, both of which promoted health and exercise.
By the time of her passing in 2003 at the age of 59, Lucille Roberts had built a $30 million health club empire with over 50 gyms and partner locations across the northeastern United States. In 2017, the brand was acquired by Town Sports International, which continued its mission of empowering women through fitness.
Lucille Roberts Women’s Fitness remains committed to providing a welcoming and motivating atmosphere where women can focus on their health and fitness goals. The gym operates in multiple locations across the northeastern United States, including in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Long Island, Manhattan, New Jersey, and Queens.
Memberships at Lucille Roberts Women’s Fitness offer access to locker rooms, modern training equipment, and a variety of fitness classes. Additional benefits include guest privileges, a free personal fitness assessment, free team training and UXF demos, and preferred pricing on select services. Membership options include the LR Neighborhood plan, which costs $29.99 per month with a one-year commitment or $34.99 per month for a month-to-month option, and the LR Passport membership for $49.99 per month, allowing access to all locations with no commitment.
All memberships come with a 10-day money-back guarantee. If a member chooses to cancel, they must follow the gym’s specific cancellation instructions. Lucille Roberts Women’s Fitness continues to provide a supportive and empowering space for women to achieve their fitness goals, honoring the legacy of its founder.
